Infidelity Inlet: A Liars Island Suspense Page 9
It was Casey saying that Robert was gone that really shook Stacy. She said she couldn’t get those words out of her head. Why would Robert be gone if Casey was still at his house? And in that moment, I remembered Dave. I turned to the medic who was about to take my blood pressure and stopped him. “Wait, my friend, he’s upstairs. I think he might be dead.”
“No,” the cop who’d been questioning me said. “We found a guy up there, but he’s okay. They’re working on him right now.”
I had the medic and the cop help me up, then I headed up the stairs, and there, sprawled out on the kitchen floor, was Dave. I got down on my knees next to him, and when he saw me, he gave me a weak smile.
“Hey, you’re alive,” he said. “They wouldn’t tell me anything.”
“Yeah, I’m good. How are you feeling?”
“Not too bad. Sorry I disappeared on you. She got me in the head.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah, I was out for a while, I guess.”
Dave glanced around for a moment, then addressed the medic. “Hey, where is it? The thing she hit me with.”
The medic picked up the Henry Moore statue, and it was split in half.
“I don’t think it was carved out of stone,” Dave said with a laugh. “It looks more like plaster or something.”
“Wow, yeah, that must be a replica.”
“Thank God,” he said. “My head hurts like hell, but if it was stone, I’m pretty sure I’d be dead.”
“Yeah, you’re one lucky son of a bitch.” I was glad to see that Dave was able to laugh about everything, but I felt terrible. “I’m sorry I got you into this. I shouldn’t have brought you out here. It was really irresponsible of me.”
“Hey, that’s okay. You didn’t know what was gonna happen.” He glanced up at the ceiling, then back at me, and scrunched his eyebrows together. “Hey, what did happen?”
I laughed, then sat back on my heels. I was so relieved that I was okay, and that Dave was alive, that I didn’t really care about much of anything else. All I could think about was getting home and telling Annette how much I loved her. And all I hoped was that she would give me another chance.
But I knew, before I could do any of that, Dave and I had to get patched up first. “I’ll tell you all about it on the way to the hospital.”
“Yeah?” he asked. “Everything?”
“Yeah, everything.”
“Even the good stuff? Like how you messed up your shoulder, and why you have a bandage around your head?”
“Yeah,” I said as I gave his arm a little nudge. “Even that stuff. Now shut up and let them take you out to the ambulance. I wanna get the hell out of here, and get home to my wife.”
